PSGH - A peek into Our journey

A Brief history …

In 2016, Dr. Dolon Das and Dr Tapan Rami decided to perform Durga Puja with the miniature version of Ma Durga idolizing Bagbazar Durga pratima made from eight precious metals (asthadhatu) in a “barowari” setting at their house, where they graciously invited a lot of people to attend the Puja.  The deities were scuplted by famous artist, Goutam Pal from India. Priest duties were performed by Dr. Bishnupada Goswami. There were at least 150 devotees who came forward to join the event. There were families who helped financially for valet service, food and flowers. The environment for the Puja was very good and it became like a family such that, after the puja was over, there was request from devotees to continue the event every year. They focused on creating an ensemble where all were welcome to join the festivities and paying their homage to the Goddess of Power. In keeping with that vision, a non-profit organization was set up with the name PSGH (Puja Samithi of greater Houston). The members were Dr. Chandramallika Das, Dr. Sonali Majumder, Dr. Salil Banerjee, Dr. Dolon Das, Partha Sen, Ruma Chatterjee.

With the great success and interest from people, the team decided to increase the scope of the Puja in 2017. The Puja was held in Sri Radha Krishna temple for four days. Various people helped with significant contributions in the form of food sponsorship, member pledges and even helping out with providing tea/coffee for the volunteers. A great performance by Dr. Salil Banerjee and team on the Mahalaya Agomani inaugurated the Puja followed by performances from local artists.

In the year 2018, PSGH observed a successful Durga Puja followed by Kali Puja at ISKCON with wonderful food provided fresh from onsite Govinda’s restaurant and great cultural programs at Gauranga Hall. Various local artists and artists from India performed to make this event enjoyable for all.

Last year, Durga Puja was held at the St. Thomas Indian Church in Stafford. The Puja entertainment program included Bollywood artist and local talents including the grand Mahalaya program. There were professional performers to entertain the attendees at night. The food was provided by Govinda’s from ISKCON.

This year, 2020, PSGH will celebrate both Durga Puja and Kali Puja and cordially invites all devotees to join the celebration. Both Pujas will be held virtually and will be live-streamed.
